My first drawing, at the age of seven, was of a tree. I wanted to capture the vitality of the wind blowing off the branches. It was then that I realized the power of and the limitations of drawing. Much later in my adult life, I also experienced same revelation at the emerging image of my first black and white photograph in the tray. I realize today that those images carried an inherent thread between my works: the investigation of perception and this "non-verbal" reality in the picture that stirs the senses. I am interested in the act of observation, the intimate relationship I have with my subjects and the exploration of the spaces between. This involvement is not only physical, spiritual and psychological but intuitive as well. Through painting and photography, the act of creation pulls out the rhythmic forces beneath the process. The interconnection between all things reveals information while simultaneously guiding an individual intuitive process, challenging me to be present while seeing and being attentive. My work is a lifelong relentless effort to examine and represent visual perception. The psychological and philosophical implications of pushing art past its descriptive mandates is essential. These internal implications allow art past its descriptive order. Through the medium and technique there is an exploration to pursuit an interior reality allowing unconscious implications to stir the process. Each piece is a renewed search; a search for line, form or revelation of overlapping worlds.
A well known tango song says "twenty year is nothing," yet, much had happened since twenty years ago when I built my first web site. I have seen my work travelled between figurative and abstract to finally flow into a personal abstract expressionist form. My work is influenced by having lived my early seventeen years of age in a sixty percent tropical forested country. Experiences in traveling, speaking multiple languages and a long career in diplomacy have all influenced how I relate to physical spaces and the intrinsic or natural bond between cultures and languages. As an artist, I often stand in a state of self reflection and as a connector between worlds – culture, language and reality.
